HC grants interim protection to Aroop Biswas in 'attempt to murder' case
The Bhawanipur police have arrested a notorious local criminal, Rakesh Sau alias Vicky, from Durgapur while he was attempting to flee to Jharkhand by road. The arrest was executed by a special team acting on the orders of Bhawanipur police station OC Soumitra Basu. Vicky, who previously wielded significant influence in the area by leveraging his closeness to a Trinamool Congress leader after the 2021 election results, had been on the run after a fresh complaint was lodged against him.
The arrest follows a complaint filed by a resident of Beninandan Street in Bhawanipur, who alleged that Vicky and two associates forcefully occupied two rooms of his house in 2021. When the complainant protested and asked them to leave, Vicky allegedly held a pistol to his throat, threatened his family, and demanded an extortion amount of Rs 30 lakh to vacate the premises. Despite the threat, Vicky refused to leave the occupied rooms and continued to intimidate the residents.
The matter escalated recently when the complainant again asked Vicky to vacate the house after the new government took office, prompting Vicky to issue fresh death threats. Vicky, who had recently secured bail in another case investigated by the Lalbazar detectives, went into hiding upon learning about this new police complaint. Bhawanipur police tracked his movements, intercepted him in Durgapur before he could cross the state border, and are currently interrogating him to recover the weapons used in the crime.
